Angkor literally means "Capital City" Khmer refers to the dominant ethnic group in modern and ancient Cambodia, which represents the pinnacle of the ancient Khmer architecture, art and civilization.
Angkor is situated in a large basin framed by the Tonle Sap (the Great Lake) in the South and the Kulen hills in the north. This plateau is drained by tributaries of the Siem Reap river and intercepted by three hills - Phnom Bok, Phnom Bakheng and Phnom Krom, which become the sites of temples built by Yasovarman I in the tenth century.
